Hello my lovelies!

Today I wanted to share with you some of my favourite places to buy green and natural hair, skincare, makeup, bath and body products in Ottawa. I do a lot of my shopping online (and I will write about some of my favourite websites in a future post), but I still love the brick and mortar experience of getting to physically try out products before you buy – especially for make-up! If you are just making the switch to green or natural products as well, you may find it less overwhelming to start by visiting local stores to find goodies, especially if you pick ones that do some of the legwork and research for you!  So, here is my list of the top 8 places in Ottawa to find green and natural beauty and personal care products!

8.  Dream Weaver 1237411_583083195060527_1734209972_o

Located at: 320 Richmond Rd in Westboro

What you will find: Skincare, bath and body products

The perks: This little boutique is absolutely adorable and home to a number of wonderful goodies. The owner, Lee Anne Frederickson, really cares about the products she sells and you will often find her working in the shop! She is always willing to answer your questions and recommend products. Dream Weaver features a lot of local companies (such as Purple Urchin) and made-in-Canada products and brands (such as The Rocky Mountain Soap Company, Pearl and Daisy, and Seracon). I have yet to find some of these brands sold anywhere else in Ottawa!

Imperfections: Unfortunately, Dream Weaver does not exclusively sell natural products so make sure to check the label or ask questions! Their selection is slightly more limited so you may not be able find what exactly you are looking for – hopefully they will start to carry more brands soon!

7. Herb & Spice Wellness Shop10688447_538003283009702_5362094468215039963_o

Located at: 375 Bank St in Downtown Ottawa

What you will find: Make-up, Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body Products, + Other Wellness Items

The perks: The Herb & Spice Wellness Shop is a spin-off expansion of the Herb & Spice grocery stores and focuses on health, wellness, and personal care products. What I love about this shop is the location – it is right across the street from the Herb & Spice grocery store so you can pick up all some natural and organic food items at the same time. The shop has a fairly large inventory of various brands, including Boho Cosmetics, LACC nail products, 2Chic Hair Care, Kiss My Face, and many more!

Imperfections: While this shop does carry some natural and green make-up products, the selection of cosmetics is very limited (2-3 brands). This shop is much more focused on personal care products and has a larger selection of skin, hair care, bath and body products as well as other health and wellness items (such as supplements, vitamins, ailment creams, etc.).

6. Natural Food Pantry Natural Food Pantry

Located at: Multiple Locations

What you will find: Make-up, Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body Products, + Other Wellness Items

The perks: The Natural Food Pantry is a one-stop shop for many of your natural and organic wellness, personal care and health food needs! They carry a wide range of products at very reasonable prices. They also have a free membership program where you can earn rewards points on the purchases you make. I have always found the staff working there to be very knowledgeable and friendly. They carry some awesome brands, such as ZuZu Luxe Cosmetics, Tom’s of Maine, and Dessert Essence.

Imperfections: Once again, unfortunately the selection of natural cosmetics products at the Natural Food Pantry stores is very limited (2-3 brands). These stores have a much larger selection of skin care, bath and body products, as well as other health and wellness items (such as supplements, vitamins, cleaning supplies, etc.).

5. Kardish Health Food CentresKardishStorePhoto

Located at: Multiple Locations

What you will find: Make-up, Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body Products, + Other Wellness Items

The perks: Kardish Health Food Centres have an amazing selection of natural and organic wellness, personal care, and health food products. They carry certain brands and products that I have not yet been able to find anywhere else in the city. Examples include: Andalou Naturals, Pacifica, Green Beaver, and many others.  They also have a free membership program where you can earn rewards points on the purchases you make.  I have always found staff to be very knowledgeable and willing to help answer questions or make product recommendations.

Imperfections: Pacifica is really the only make-up line that Kardish carries, so their selection of natural cosmetics products is extremely limited.  Like many of the other stores in Ottawa, they have a much larger selection of hair and skin care, bath and body products, and other health and wellness items (such as supplements, vitamins, home products, etc.).

4. Westboro Organics at Westboro PharmaSave10452999_762753627078181_2382816277316786450_o

Located at: 421 Richmond Rd in Westboro

What you will find: Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body Products, + Other Wellness Items

The perks: This location is incredibly convenient! It has all the benefits of a regular Pharmasave, including a full pharmacy and a Canada Post desk, but an ever-increasingly large portion of the store has been deemed “Westboro Organics” – which is dedicated to showcasing green, natural and organic products. I hope this is something that they are planning to continue in more of their stores! In addition to carrying some more well-known brands like Burt’s BeesDessert Essence, and Eco-Tools, they also carry the full Purple Urchin line (which is made here in Ottawa).

Imperfections: This store did at one point carry a line of natural make-up (Lotus Pure Organics), but they recently put all the products on extreme clearance so I think they are discontinuing the sale of this brand and will no longer be selling any green or natural cosmetics products. Major bummer! While they have a fairly good selection of skincare, bath and body products, and other wellness items (feminine hygiene products, ailment creams, beauty accessories/tools, etc.), their selection of green hair care products is limited (2-3 brands). In addition, they do not exclusively sell green or natural products so  make sure to check the label and ask questions!

3. Loblaws / Real Canadian Superstores superstore

Located at: Multiple Locations

What you will find: Make-up (at some locations), Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body  Products, + Other Wellness Items

The perks: The most obvious benefits to these stores is location, accessibility and convenience – they are everywhere in Ottawa and you can pick up your green beauty products during your weekly grocery shopping trip! These stores now have a dedicated organic section, where you can find a fairly good selection of skin, hair care, bath and body, as well as other wellness, personal care, and health food products (such as Alba Botanica, Burt’s BeesTom’s of Maine, and many others) . I often find that you can get products at really awesome sale prices (especially those little pink 50% off stickers!). Loblaws stores also carry nearly the full line of Physician’s Formula Organic Wear makeup products – which is extremely hard to find anywhere else! In addition, you can earn PC points for all your purchases that can be put towards free groceries and other items at the store.

Imperfections: The selection of products available will vary from store to store. I have found that Loblaws stores tend to carry more cosmetics and personal care products compared to the Superstore locations. Similarly, prices tend  to vary from store to store. While I often find prices to be comparable or slightly cheaper than other stores, Loblaws can sometimes (depending on the product) be slightly more expensive.  In addition, they do not exclusively sell green or natural products so make sure to check the label and ask questions!

2. Winners / HomeSense winners

Located at: Multiple locations – my favourite is 1651 Merivale Rd in Nepean

What you will find: Selection varies but can include Make-up, Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body Products

The perks: In recent years, Winners and HomeSense have begun to carry more and more green and natural personal care products. These frequently and most consistently include skin and health care, beauty accessories, as well as bath and body products. Brands that I have seen sold at these stores have included: Eco-Tools, Dr. Hauschka, Sappho Cosmetics, Juice Beauty, and many more! The biggest perk for shopping at Winners and HomeSense is that you can find products at significantly lower prices, which is great if you are trying something for the first time and maybe don’t want to pay full price for it!

Imperfections: Product selection varies drastically from store-to-store and on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, it is just the nature of the beast since Winners and HomeSense do not sell a consistent line of products. This means that there is a chance you might not find what you are looking for and this is especially true for natural and green make-up products. Additionally, I have found that expiry dates also vary on the products, so make sure to check before you buy to make sure your item won’t go bad before you can use it!

And my number one pick is….

1. Terra20 10303759_524778047627182_6062085405663764854_n

Located at: 2685 Iris St (Pinecrest Shopping Centre) in Nepean & 1304 Wellington St W in Westboro

What you will find: Make-up, Skin and Hair Care, Bath & Body Products, + Other Wellness Items

The perks: Terra20 does a lot of the research and legwork for you – they have banned 15 harmful chemical ingredients from their stores (including parabens, formaldehyde, and PEGs). They have also developed a very intensive labeling system made of nine different symbols which quickly helps to identify certain attributes of products, such as if they are cruelty-free, plant-based, Canadian-made, etc. In my opinion, this is the best part of terra20 and makes shopping there a lot of fun. I feel like I have a lot less to worry about and can just focus on finding products I love, rather than stopping to read ingredient lists.

In addition, the selection at terra20 is incredible! They by far have the biggest inventory of natural make-up products out of any of the stores on this list, which includes brands such as 100% Pure, Gabriel Cosmetics, Pure Anada, and many, many others! Plus, they are constantly getting in new brands for you to try! Their selection of hair, skin care, bath and body, as well as other health and wellness items is equally as expansive. You will almost always be able to find what you are looking for!

Imperfections: The biggest downside to terra20 is, unfortunately, their prices. I have found that some of their price points are higher than other stores that sell the same product, especially for certain basic items like toothpaste or deodorant. It is also slightly harder to get to: their biggest location is in the Pinecrest Shopping Centre in Nepean (right next to the Ikea). They just opened a new location in Westboro, but it is has shorter hours, is significantly smaller and has a drastically reduced make-up section.

So those are my top 8 places to buy green and natural beauty products in Ottawa! I hope this list gives you some ideas for places to explore. You know me – I am a big fan of shopping local and try to do it whenever I can.

I will see you all next week!
