Hello my lovelies!

As you know, I think it is so important to be an informed consumer and I am always looking to learn more about the cosmetics industry and what is inside the products we use. The book “No More Dirty Looks” by Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt was on my reading wishlist for a long time and I am so happy I finally was able to dedicate some time to finishing it!

Siobhan and Alexandra are two women who, like me, wanted to know more about the beauty products they were using and how their bodies were being affected. It all started with a Brazilian blowout and once the two women started doing more research into all the different harmful chemicals and toxins commonly used in the cosmetics industry, they were inspired to share this information and write No More Dirty Looks.

The book is separated into ten chapters.

The first three chapters introduce the women’s story, break down how the beauty and cosmetics industry is currently regulated (mostly the United States and FDA because the two women are American), and explain the most common toxic ingredient offenders and why you should avoid them. Chapters 4 through 8 focus on a different body part or group of products (e.g., Your Hair, Your Face, Your Makeup, Your Body, Your Nails).  Each of these chapters explains the role of various ingredients, why they are used, which toxins to look out for, as well as suggestions for alternatives or DIY solutions that are safe and natural.

The last two chapters and afterword look at the bigger picture: your diet, lifestyle, and what we can do moving forward. The women try to create linkages and demonstrate the connection between how other factors in your life can affect your appearance, with an emphasis on how to get truly healthy skin.

What I Liked About No More Dirty Looks: The book reads like a conversation among friends. The writing is simple, easy to understand, and really focuses on information that is relavent to women who are trying to decipher what is inside the products they use. I really liked how the book was set up: each chapter is broken down into different products, common toxins, and recommended alternatives. My favourite part was the inclusion of DIY options – many of which I bookmarked to try later! This makes it a really great starting point for someone choosing to go green as it provides you with an easy path forward on how to make the switch.

What I Didn’t Like: Usually I have a lot more to say in this section, but there honestly weren’t too many things I didn’t like about this book. As a Canadian, I would have loved if some mention had been given to the regulatory context in our country or other international spheres like the European Union – but I also recognize how difficult this is, especially since their target market is readers in the United States. Also, a number of amazing green and natural brands are not mentioned or included in the suggested alternatives – most likely because it is such an emerging industry and new companies are popping up all the time! The downside is that the product recommendations they make will quickly become outdated or too narrow in scope. These are very nit-picky critiques though – I really have nothing to bad say about the substance of this book! 🙂

My Overall Review:  This book is a great starting point for someone new to the world of green and natural beauty products. I would definitely recommend it to someone who wants to learn more about the industry and begin a transition to healthier products. If you are a more of a “veteran” green beauty guru like me, you will likely enjoy the DIY sections and product recommendations. Overall, a fun and easy read that is also very informative.
